Our Story

Founded in 2001 by Mr. Twinomujuni Bernard and Dr. Mamoru Ohno, a Japanese veterinarian passionate about wildlife conservation, Africa Runners Company was born from a shared vision — to make travel across Uganda both seamless and meaningful.

At the time, Bernard worked in Kampala’s hospitality industry and saw the growing need for reliable transport linking travelers to lodges and safari destinations. Partnering with Dr. Ohno, whose deep love for Uganda’s wildlife and people inspired his commitment to conservation, they created a small transport service built on trust, professionalism, and care.

What began with a single vehicle soon grew into a respected tour and destination management company (DMC) offering tailor-made safaris, tours, and travel logistics across Uganda and East Africa.

Today, as proud members of AUTO, UTB, UWA, and ATTA, Africa Runners continues to uphold its founding values — reliability, sustainability, and genuine cultural connection. We work closely with international travel advisors and tour operators to deliver unforgettable, responsible travel experiences that support local communities and preserve the natural beauty of East Africa.

When is the best time to book a gorilla trekking experience for my clients?

Booking gorilla treks requires planning well in advance as slots are limited, particularly during the dry seasons. The best times for gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda are during the dry months:

  • Uganda: June to September and December to February.
  • Rwanda: December to March and June to September

If your clients are hoping to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration or other seasonal safaris, we advise booking 12 months in advance to guarantee availability.

What should my clients pack for Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding, so your clients should be prepared for a challenging yet rewarding experience. We recommend packing the following essentials:

  • Lightweight long-sleeved clothing to protect from thorns and insects.
  • Trekking boots for rocky and muddy terrain.
  • Gloves, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen, lip balm, and insect repellent.
  • A small backpack with water, snacks, and a camera.

What are the key rules for gorilla trekking?

Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but it’s essential that your clients understand the regulations to ensure both their safety and the protection of these endangered animals:

  • Only 8 people per gorilla family per day.
  • Maintain a 7-meter distance from the gorillas at all times.
  • No smoking, eating, or drinking near the gorillas.
  • Clients should be in good health—illness can pose a serious risk to the gorillas.
  • Follow all instructions from the guide and trackers to ensure safety.

What is the age requirement for children on safari?

Many safari lodges and camps have a minimum age requirement for children, usually between 8 and 12 years. Some lodges allow younger children, but they often need to be accompanied by a private game vehicle. If you have clients traveling with kids, consult with us to find the best lodges that cater to families, ensuring both safety and fun for the whole family.

What important documents are required for travel to East Africa?

Passports
Ensure your clients’ passports are valid for at least six months beyond their return date. They should also have two consecutive blank pages for entry and visa stamps. Don’t forget to advise your clients to make physical and digital copies of their passports for emergencies.

Visas
Certain East African countries require visas, which may need to be arranged in advance. We recommend advising your clients to secure their visas before departure. Some countries offer visas on arrival, but this can be a time-consuming process.

The East Africa Tourist Visa, valid for 90 days and covering Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, is a great option for multi-destination trips. For more details, please reach out to our team.

Inoculation Certificates
Yellow Fever: All travelers to East Africa must present a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate if traveling from a yellow fever-endemic country. It is a mandatory requirement for entry.

What are the luggage requirements for East African safaris?

Traveling in East Africa often involves light aircraft, which have strict luggage guidelines.

  • Weight: No more than 15kg / 33lbs per person.
  • Luggage Type: Soft-sided, flexible bags are required. No hard cases are allowed.
  • Dimensions: Luggage should not exceed 25cm x 30cm in size.

Make sure your clients are prepared to meet these requirements for a smooth safari experience.

How far in advance should I book a safari for my clients?

For low-season travel, we recommend booking 3 to 4 months in advance, while for the peak and shoulder seasons, booking 9 to 12 months ahead is ideal. Popular luxury lodges and exclusive tours fill up quickly, especially during peak season, and early booking will help secure the best experiences for your clients.

What clothing should my clients pack for a safari?

The weather in East Africa can vary widely, so we recommend lightweight, breathable fabrics for daytime and warmer layers for early mornings and evenings. Neutral-colored clothing (such as khaki or olive green) is ideal, as it blends well with the environment and avoids drawing attention from wildlife.

A waterproof jacket is also recommended for unexpected rain showers. Don’t forget mosquito-repellent clothing for the evening game drives. A pair of comfortable shoes for walking safaris is essential.

Should my clients book a private game vehicle?

For those who prefer a personalized experience, a private game vehicle offers flexibility and a more intimate safari. With a dedicated guide, your clients can plan their day around their own preferences, stay longer at wildlife sightings, and enjoy more privacy and comfort. A private vehicle also ensures that they have the full attention of the guide, making the experience all the more enriching.
