This policy outlines our approach to environmental responsibility, ethical conduct, and sustainable operations.

Sustainable Tourism Policy

African Runners Company Limited (A.R.C) is a company incorporated and registered under laws of Uganda and deals in tourism business in the Country.

1. DEFINATIONS:

Tourism policy refers to a set of guidelines, principles and regulations formulated by governments and relevant authorities to guide the development, management and promotion of tourism industry within a specific region or country. Uganda has had policies like Uganda Tourism Policy (2015-2020), National Tourism Policy (2003), Community-Based Tourism Development guidelines, Uganda Wildlife Policy (2014) and many others. These policies are designed to achieve sustainable and responsible tourism growth, considering economy, social, culture and environmental factors.

Tourism policy also refer to guidelines for planning and developing the tourism industry, attraction, activities.

Sustainable tourism is defined as tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impact.

2. SCOPE.

Sustainable Tourism policies often address issues such as infrastructure development, conservation, community engagement, marketing strategies and overall industry management as seen below:

1. SUSTAINABLE TOURISM POLICY STATEMENT

Sustainable tourism emphasizes responsible travel practices that prioritize environmental preservation and local community well-being. It aims to protect natural resources and wildlife while promoting cultural respect and economic support for local populations. By making conscious choices, travelers to help tourism play a key role in conversation and community development, fostering a travel experience that both meaningful and beneficial for all involved.There is an impact of tourism in areas like economics, socio-cultural aspects, and the environment. There are both positive and negative impacts. This is the primary reason for A.R.C’S to develop sustainable tourism policies to address the needs, tourism industry, the environment and host communities.

2. SUSTAINABLE TOURISM POLICIES AND THEIR OBJECTIVES AT A.R.C

I. Conservation and protection of natural resources. ARC practices gorilla habituation and tracking in Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga National Park, which have significantly contributed to the conservation and protection of endangered mountain gorillas. Alongside the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s efforts to safeguard wildlife and restore habitats, these initiatives like natural walks have ensured the long-term survival of species that might otherwise face extinction. This underscores the importance of continuing tourism activities in Uganda to benefit future generations.

a) Reduction on paper use is essential for tourism company like A.R.C to adopt through sustainable practices like digital documentation of using cloud-based storage solutions and digital communication tools.

b) Energy reduction is a crucial aspect of environment conservation by considering strategies like installing LED lighting and motion sensors to reduce energy consumption in offices, hotels and attractions. Implement smart energy management system to monitor and optimize energy usage in real time.

c) Water reduction under sustainable tourism policy can be implemented through strategies like water efficient fixtures of installing low flow shower heads, toilets and faucets in hotels, restaurants and attractions to reduce water consumption.

d) Waste management can be effective through reduce,reuse,recycle by implementing waste reduction program that encourages reducing waste generation, reusing materials where possible and recycling.

e) Pollution reduction as a crucial aspect of sustainable tourism policies which can be implemented through implementing measures to reduce air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution reduction from transportation such as promoting electric or hybrid vehicles and encouraging public transportation, walking and cycling.

II. Community empowerment and Economic impacts. Positive impacts of tourism are foreign exchange earnings, better balance of payment, regional development, and diversification of the economy, increased revenue, newemployment opportunities, contribution to local economies and inducement of infrastructure investment.

a) The negative impact are inflation, opportunity costs, dependency, seasonality, leakage,enclave tourism, seasonal character of jobs.

b) Community engagement and benefit sharing is highly emphasised at A.R.C and the importance of community engagement in tourism development by involving strategies for local community participation in decision making processes through creation of community based tourism initiatives and mechanisms for ensuring that local communities benefit economically and socially from tourism activities.

c) Community-based tourism such as Obumwe conservation village founded by A.R.C have created employment opportunities and ready market for locally made arts and crafts. Community walks, community owned accomodation facilities have generated income for local communities. Additionally, sustainable practices like crafting have reduced the reliance on unsustainable activities such as charcoal burning as a means of livelihood.

d) Locals are often employed in hospitality services like, echo-lodges, restaurants and in transport services of A.R.C which are intergral to tourism benefits to sorrounding communities.

III. Promotion of responsible tourism: A.R.C educates tourists on how to be responsible travelers when visiting various destinations, with a focus on minimising their negative impacts on both the environment and host communities. Tourists are guided on important aspects, such as respecting the culture and traditions of indigenous people and preserving the environments they visit. This ensures that tourism does not disrupt or degrade the cultural practices and natural sorrundings of these destinations

IV. Social- Cultural Impact: A.R.C encourages societies to protect cultural heritage, restoration of conventional arts and crafts, cultivation of cultural pride and sense of identity and cross-cultural exchange. This prevents loss of cultural character, loss of realism of traditional arts and crafts, commercialization of human relationships and conflicts between hosts and tourists. Sustainable tourism activities such as the Batwa cultural experience in Buhoma, Bwindi, where the Batwa share their heritage experience like hunting and food gathering lifestule with visitors.

V. Infrastructure Development: A.R.C has participated in development of few infrastructure to support tourism industry like transportation, accommodation facilities and other amenities, such investments are to enhance accessibility and improve the overall visitor experience, thereby promoting tourism development.

VI. Marketing and promotion: A.R.C has outlined strategies for marketing and promoting the destination to attract visitors through development of branding initiatives, participation in international tourism events, digital marketing campaigns and collaboration with travel trade partners. Promotions aim at increasing the visibility of destination and attract a diverserange of tourists.

VII. Quality assurance and standards: A.R.C has established and maintained quality standards that sets out guidelines for quality services, accommodation and attractions which contributes to positive visitor experience and help to build the destination’s reputation as a reliable and attractive tourist spot.

VIII. Research and data collection: A.R.C has emphasised the importance of research and data collection to inform decision making. This includes gathering information on visitor demographics, market trades and economic impact of tourism which has enabled it to adapt strategies and make informed decision to support sustainable tourism development.

3. IMPLEMENTATION AND MONITORING.

a) Sustainability team. A.R.C has a designated team to oversee sustainability initiatives and monitor progress.

b) Regular Audits: A.R.C is to conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with sustainability policies.

c) Stakeholder engagement to engage with local communities, employees, and suppliers to promote sustainability.

d) Training and education: Provide ongoing training and education on sustainability practices.

e) Innovation and best practices: A.R.C commits to stay updated with best practices and innovative sustainability solution

In summary,The above highlights A.R.C’S commitment to sustainable tourism development, community engagement and conservation of Uganda’s rich natural and cultural heritage. A.R.C plays a crucial role in shaping the industry, ensuring that it contributes positively to the overall development of the country while minimizing negative impacts.

By combining regulatory measures with promotion strategies, A.R.C has created an environment that maximizes benefits of tourism while minimizing its negative impacts.
