Gorilla trekking is one of the most intimate and emotionally powerful wildlife encounters on Earth. Deep in the mist-covered rainforests of the Albertine Rift, guests spend time with wild mountain gorillas as they feed, play, groom, and interact as families. With fewer than 1,100 individuals remaining, this is not simply a safari activity — it is a rare privilege, a conservation-driven encounter, and a once-in-a-lifetime memory that stays with travellers long after they leave the forest.

Unlike vehicle-based safaris, gorilla trekking is personal, immersive, and human-scaled. Every trek is different. Every gorilla family has its own personality. And every traveller walks away changed.

Mountain gorillas live only in one small ecological zone on Earth — the volcanic rainforests shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The experience is similar in all three countries, but each destination offers a different style, level of comfort, and degree of adventure.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Home to over half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, Bwindi offers the most extensive trekking network and the greatest number of habituated gorilla families. Trekking can be moderately to highly strenuous, depending on the group location, and may involve steep, muddy terrain — ideal for guests who want the full adventure, not the shortcut version.

Unique to Uganda — The Gorilla Habituation Experience
Uganda is the only place where guests can spend up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family, joining researchers and trackers as they acclimate gorillas to human presence. This is a high-value, low-volume experience ideal for photographers, conservation travellers, and guests seeking a deeper emotional connection.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Quieter and more remote than Bwindi, Mgahinga sits at the base of the Virunga volcanoes and offers gorilla trekking that can be paired with golden monkey tracking and volcano hiking — perfect for active and adventure-driven clients.

Vulkan-Nationalpark
Known for shorter trekking distances and a more refined, high-end guest experience, Rwanda offers easy access from Kigali (approx. 2.5 hours by road) and a luxury hospitality ecosystem built around conservation, exclusivity, and low-impact tourism. Treks here are generally less physically demanding than Uganda, making it suitable for guests who prefer comfort and efficiency without compromising depth of experience.

Rwanda also allows travellers to combine gorilla trekking with Kigali culture, Akagera Big 5 safaris, und Nyungwe chimpanzee trekking — ideal for guests with limited time who still want multi-layered experiences.

Virunga National Park is the oldest national park in Africa and historically one of the most meaningful gorilla destinations. However, due to ongoing security concerns, trekking here is recommended only for highly experienced, specialist adventure travellers. When open, it offers unmatched wilderness, low visitor numbers, and the opportunity to pair gorillas with an active volcano hike (Mount Nyiragongo).
